Winter Energy Saving Tips
By Karen B. Tega Cay S.C. (Charlotte) Published: 01/17/2009
1. Turn off the lights in offices and rooms that are unoccupied.
By lighting office space only when needed, you can save 10 to 40 percent of the electricity used for that purpose.
2. Let the sun shine in and keep blinds open when the sun is out. Natural light can enhance health and productivity for building occupants and can also save energy costs.
3. Shut off computer monitors when not in use, or enable the “sleep” feature on computers. Screen savers do not save energy.
4. The energy saving “sleep mode” can reduce computer energy consumption by as much as 90 percent.
5. Turn off printer, copier and fax machines when not in use, especially at the end of the day or on weekends.
5. For every kilowatt-hour of electricity that we use, one pound of greenhouse gases is emitted.
6. Turn off and unplug all electronics and personal appliances when not needed.
These products consume between three and four percent of all electricity used in the country which is enough energy to fully power all of the homes in California and Washington State for one year!
