STAY COOL BY GOING GREEN

STAY COOL BY GOING GREEN: How to Find an Air Conditioning Contractor you can Trust to Provide you with an Energy Efficient A/C System that Saves Money and Protects the Environment Your air conditioner may be on its last leg, and you worry about it surviving another season. The last thing you want is to be trapped in your home without it during the summer.
Two major issues may have been holding you back from taking action: Cost & Trust. Replacing your central-air system is an expense that many people dread. To add to your anxieties, you need to find an A/C and Heating contractor that you can trust. Like automotive mechanics and plumbers, finding an HVAC specialist you can come to rely upon can be difficult. Will they sell you the unit that is best for your needs or one that brings them the most profit? Do they know what they are doing? Do they stand behind their work and the product they install in your home?
There is good news on both fronts.
You want an Energy Efficient Air Conditioning System that reduces environmental impact, sufficiently cools your home, and does not burn a hole through your wallet.
You can have all three, and for much less than you think. Starting back on January 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has made provisions for significant tax credits of up to 30% of the cost of your installed unit for A/C systems that increase efficiency and performance. The tax credit is worth $1,500. As an added incentive, many utilities are actually offering “buy-backs” of old units when you replace your equipment. A good A/C contractor will be able to tell you about the units that qualify for the federal program, and be able to tell you about additional incentives available in your area.
Choosing an A/C and Heating Contractor means doing your homework.
Here are a few simple tips to make sure you choose an A/C and Heating Contractor that cares about the environment, knows what they are doing, and treats you fairly.
1. Start by Checking Credentials.
As with the automotive industry, A/C contractors can earn “master” certification in HVAC, as well as earn recognition through various industry related guilds such as ACCA, ACECC, and of course- the BBB.
2. Ask for References.
If you don’t personally know somebody who can recommend a company, ask for references from former customers. A good contractor values their customers, and their customers value them. Those customers are normally happy to be a reference. Be wary of any contractor who cannot provide you with references.
3. Expect a home-inspection.
Any contract worth his/her salt will thoroughly examine your home or business facility and evaluate your specific needs. They should be evaluating the physical needs of your property, your environmental concerns, and the level of comfort you require.
4. Check Licensing.
Every state or county requires HVAC contractors to be licensed. Most states require contractors to be able to produce their license, liability and workmen’s compensation insurance on demand. Doing this is a simple way to quickly eliminate a fly-by-night and ensure you’re dealing with a professional.
5. Ask Questions about Equipment and Labor Warranties.
Don’t be afraid to quiz the contractor about the equipment they are suggesting for your home.
• What are the energy saving benefits?
• What is its environmental footprint?
• Is it eligible for rebates and tax credits?
• What is the manufacturer’s warranty?
• What about a labor warranty?
• Is the unit energy-star rated for efficiency?
• How do they dispose of harmful refrigerants in your old equipment?
6. What about Preventative Maintenance Services.
Often, people are wary of service contracts. In the case of heating and air conditioning, you should seriously consider one. The average unit will last between 10-15 years. With regular maintenance, your system can last significantly longer. In addition, the nominal fees are nothing compared to a costly repair, because you neglected the equipment. These fees often pay for themselves in terms of maintaining optimum efficiency and performance.
7. Get a Written Proposal.
You need to compare the cost of products, services, and prices. Get at least three estimates. Don’t be afraid to ask for one. Like everything else, get it in writing.
8. Lastly, Get a Written Contract.
Once you’ve committed to a contractor you can trust, get a signed agreement. It protects both of you.
